07 JAN 2009 Intellon HomePlug AV ICs to be Interoperable with Newly Confirmed IEEE P1901 Baseline St
Date: 7 Jan 2009
Synopsis: HomePlug AV-interoperability of confirmed P1901 Baseline provides seamless roadmap for Intellon customers.
IEEE’s proposed P1901 specification defines a global standard for communications over powerlines, and Intellon’s HomePlug AV products are designed and optimized for the unique challenges of powerline communications. Intellon is also actively involved in the development of the ITU G.hn standard, which seeks to define a unified communications protocol over coax wiring and phone lines as well as powerlines. The ITU group is still working on defining the overall system specification so that optimal performance can be realized for each of the three wireline media.
Intellon has a long history of supporting and implementing global standards efforts. The company has shipped over 30 million powerline communications ICs based on HomePlug, EIA,
“Powerline technology remains the holy grail of home networking and is expected to blossom once a global standard is in place,” said Steve Rago, principal analyst for broadband and IPTV at iSuppli Corporation. “Once the IEEE ratifies the P1901 standard, and interoperable powerline communications products emerge to meet the multimedia needs and bandwidth requirements in the connected home, wired home networking should grow to become a $7 billion business within five years.”
“Global standards such as the IEEE P1901 and ITU G.hn will unify our industry and accelerate the development, adoption and use of fast and reliable powerline communications products for the connected home.” said Rick Furtney, president and
